Cementitious Applied Coating Membrane

Torch On Membrane Waterproofing

Torch on membranes are waterproofing membranes commonly used in exterior areas exposed to the outside such as roofs and balconies. Composed of polymers and bitumen that protects against moisture, it is a relative strong choice of waterproofing membrane. It is also adept at preventing water pooling/ponding on certain parts of a flat surface.

Torch on membrane application requires the use of a heated torch to melt the layer onto the applied surface. It is an environmentally friendly and reliable method for various types of waterproofing works.

Types of Torch On Membrane

Two common types of torch on membranes are the Atactic Polypropylene Plastic modified asphalt (APP) and Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS).

Liquid Applied Membrane

Liquid Applied Membranes are water-based liquid applied acrylic membranes of polymer gel that provides great waterproofing ability and strength. It can be reinforced with fibreglass to increase its durability and strength. Therefore, it is commonly used to waterproof new as well as existing roofs. After application and curing, it offers a polished and seamless finish, which offers old roofs enhanced aesthetical value.

Applications

Liquid applied membrane is commonly used for waterproofing and damp-proofing of concrete surfaces, such as floor slabs, retaining walls, balconies, tunnels, bathrooms and carparks. Its highly versatile nature enables it to be used for virtually any type of structure and surface.

Advantages

It consists of a single component and has good elongation properties, thereby making it effective at bridging cracks. It is also highly adhesive to various types of substrate, and can adhere remarkable well to both horizontal and vertical surfaces. When applied near natural elements, it is able to resist soil conditions and contaminated ground water. Application can be by the cold applied method, directly by brush and cured on moisture.

Self Adhesive Membrane

There are two types of self adhesive membranes, namely the bitumen/asphalt compound and protective films. Bitumen/asphalt compounds are usually modified with specially formulated resins to provide ease of installation. The membrane can thus be manually adjusted on site to ensure precise installation. Protective films can be hot-laminated to the bituminous/asphalt compound and gives the membrane enhanced physical characteristics such as heat resistance.

Self adhesive membranes can be cold-applied without the use of open flames. This is an ideal method for application in confined spaces. The membrane provides strong chemical resistance due to its protective polymer film. It can therefore be exposed to acid and alkali.

The membrane has highly flexible properties, allowing it to easily adapt to irregular shapes without cracking or breaking. Once applied, it is also self-sealing to maintain water tightness. It also maintains a consistent thickness across surfaces.

PVC Sheet Membranes

PVC sheet membranes are high quality waterproofing membranes commonly used for rooftops and decks. It can be used both on exposed exterior surfaces as well as for concealed roofs. PVC sheet membranes have excellent waterproofing abilities including strong reliability and durability, in part due to its near-uniform thickness. It’s strong, lightweight qualities also allow foot traffic anti it, as it will not be easily damaged under such circumstances.

Traffic Bearing Membrane

Traffic Bearing Membranes are a highly durable waterproofing solution, consisting of several coats of urethane systems that allow for minor movement in cracks and joints. As they come in basic colours, they can provide aesthetic appeal.

The membrane comprises an elastomeric membrane and a protective top coat. It usually comprises a single type of material, such as a polyurethane or epoxy, or can be customised and made of a combination of materials depending on the particular use.

It is commonly used in areas with foot traffic such as balconies to heavy-duty vehicular traffic such as commercial garages. It is a fluid-applied waterproof membrane system that functions by preventing water from travelling horizontally in order prevent water damage to equipment below.
